Quote
"I don’t know much about music especially classical music.
I went to Anne Edwards concert at Mt Wilson on 8th February thinking it would be a great new experience... it was fantastic.
I was totally blown away by the sounds coming from the piano over the whole program.
I had heard some of the pieces before but most not.
The music took me to another world; a bit like a yoga meditation but so much more enjoyable." DJT

Uncle Dean Kelly, Yuin

The first section of the Public Event, will be WELCOME TO COUNTRY - Kangaroos and First Nation People (FNP).

Since 2023, Graham Davis King has been an essential Aboriginal Voice on Caring for Country and Caring for Kangaroos at our BMWKD celebrations.
We are pleased to announce that Uncle Graham will be available again in 2025 to inspire us with his wisdom and knowledge.

QUOTE
It was such a priviledged experience to sit and listen to Uncle Graham tell the Dreamtime
about kangaroos and how we as humans came about from them.
He wove so many details about the intricate relationships between all animals and Country;
and the careful balance that directly effects the rains and drought sessions.
In his telling and song he explained kangaroo movements
and I better understand why humans and kangaroos have similar emotions
and attachment to their young and to their families. Thank you Uncle.

Kathie

Kangaroo Rescue & Care Event

Prof Steve Garlick of Possumwood Wildlife Sanctuary is BMWKD KEYNOTE SPEAKER

Photo from Possumwood on Creativecowboyfilms.tv

"Possumwood Wildlife is a self-funded facility, established by Prof. Steve Garlick and Dr Rosemary Austen,
that helps with the recovery of severely injured and traumatised native animals
and undertakes engagement and research to learn more about the behaviour of these unique animals.
The work done at the recovery centre and fully equipped licensed veterinary hospital
is made possible by private donations.
The facility relies on voluntary staff, including veterinary nurses and a visiting veterinarian
and takes in around 400 to 500 injured, ill or orphaned wild animals each year".

This Saturday AFTERNOON 18th October Rescue & Care Event - will be a chance for the kangaroo loving public...

... to find out what Possumwood is doing to protect and care for our national icon,

... to find out what Possumwood is doing to help standardise and develop treatments for macropods,

... to find out what being a Rescuer and Carer means and what would help,

... to find out what to do to become a rescuer and/or carer or part of a support Network.

This event will be run in the Theatre of Wentworth Falls School of Arts

Description of the Rescue & Care Event Presentations

This Rescue & Care Event is divided into two main sections.

Section 1 is about Possumwood's leading role in advancing or developing medical and nursing protocols
for treatment of macropods.

Section 2 is a group discussion on Rescue & Care; the treatment of Kangaroo Rescuers and Carers
& how to become a rescuer and Carer or member of a support network.

In the first half of this Rescue & Care Event, Prof Steve Garlick will give presentations on ...

how the hospital and sanctuary operates;
and on Possumwood's work to get 'accumulated and new' Macropod Knowledge accredited
to develop standard protocols for care of macropods.

In the second half of this Event, Prof Steve Garlick
with Greg Keightley and Frances Carlton will coordinate a group discussion about ...

What is the best and worst of Kangaroo rescue/care experiences,
why are native animal/Kangaroo Rescuers and Carers neglected and/or persecuted and what can be done
and about what is required to become a Rescuer and Carer of Kangaroos or become a part of their support network

One SOLUTION to discuss, is from 2021 Upperhouse Inquiry on Kangaroos.
This solution states that, whether the Rescuers/Carers work through WIRES or not,
these exceptional and experienced people need to be give a significant grant each year to cover...
1. their cost of living bills,
2. a suitable residence to care for animals and to live in comfortably,
3. much needed infrastructure like hospital/clinic/rehabilitation facilities
4. medications, food and bedding for the animals.
5. vehicle, tools and other expenses for rescues
6. money to pay suitably qualified/experienced rescuers and carers who can give the primary Rescuers/Carers a break
7. time and money to allow Rescuers and Carers to get together to share practise of care for the animals in their charge
8. A network of volunteer supporters who can help out with everyday tasks/chores
9. Free Access to counselling like from Wildtalk - Caring for Wildlife Carers and other stress reducing activities
10. Acknowledge of experienced Rescuer and Carer expertise & knowledge developed using empirical study and true scientific method.

2025 Kangaroo Movie

2025 Kangaroo Movie is about a Rescuer and Carer who changes his whole life when he comes in close contact with a injured kangaroo joey.

This KANGAROO Movie will be in local Cinemas, like the Edge, Mt Vic Flicks & Glenbrook Theatre, from early SEPTEMBER 2025

The 2025 Studiocanal Kangaroo Movie will be a preview on the 7th September 2025 and in release from 18th September 2025.

This movie is directed by Kate Woods and inspired by Chris 'Brolga' Barns, the founder of The Kangaroo Sanctuary in Alice Springs.
The film follows Chris who after being stranded, teams up with a young Indigenous girl, Charlie, to help rehabilitate injured joeys.
Chris went on to rescue, and to care for, many thousands of macropods.
He is now a very strong Kangaroo Advocate and one of the most experienced Kangaroo Rescuer/Carer in Australia
.

The release of this KANGAROO movie is fortuitous as World Kangaroo Day is a month after it's release date.
This year, the Blue Mountains World Kangaroo Day Events are focusing on issues of and community support for Kangaroo Rescuers and Carers.

This movie, as a family comedy, is the perfect opportunity for us to raise community awareness of the work done by Kangaroo Rescuers & Carers in a fun, light hearted way.
We don’t have any association with the film, but the timing of the theatrical release of this movie, with such apt content,
is an opportunity we didn’t want to miss; so that we can spotlight the amazing work that goes into rescuing and caring for these wonderful animals.

We support this film and the messages it contains...
...that individual Kangaroo Rescues & Carers are dedicated to helping Kangaroos
...and why both need Public Support.

We encourage everyone to go and see this film.

Photo from Trailer of movie

This Movie Event - will be a chance for the public to hear about...

... how intelligent and begiling kangaroos and their joeys are,

... how awesome and social kangaroos are,

... the challenges Kangaroos face to their survival,

... how dedicated Kangaroo rescuers and carers are at protecting our kangaroos.

Introduction to the Outreach Events

OUTREACH is the process of informing the Public what is happening to our Kangaroos, their habitat and their Rescuers & Carers.

OUTREACH involves taking flyers, banners, posters and displays to public areas
and talking to people about what is happening to kangaroos and what we, the public, can do about it.

Outreach locations can be general or targeted.
General locations are whereever the general public is found and can be Town centres, Parks, Lookouts and Stations.
Targeted locations are whereever the specific audience is found and can be Schools, theatres, businesses or Schools.

Outreach for BLUE MOUNTAINS WORLD KANGAROO DAY EVENTS (BMWKDE) has two aims...
...to encourage attendence at one or all of the organised BMWKDE
...to inform those who can not attend about the challenges facing Kangaroos and their rescuers & Carers.
We aim for OUTREACH to eventually extend all around the rim of the Blue Mountains World Heritage Area.

Kangaroo Outreach is the process of informing the public on how government departments and other organisations
are doing the Kangaroo Killing Industry's bidding and not protecting our national icon.

In 2024, people attended the Lithgow and Katoomba railway stations in the morning and afternoon.
The public responded to us "Wishing them a happy World Kangaroo Day" and were keen to learn more.

In 2025, this outreach will happen up to and including World Kangaroo Day itself - 24/10/2025. We will be going to schools, town centres and railway stations
The flyers we will be handing out in the 2025 year, will be BMWKD25 flyers and posters as well as ...
...the Kangaroos need our help now flyer to educate people on the challenges to kangaroo survival
...the Kangaroo Care Community Group flyer that encourages each community to monitor, protect and care for their local kangaroos.

This BMWKD Outreach Event - will be a chance for the public to hear about...

... World Kangaroo Day,
... how awesome kangaroos are,
... the challenges Kangaroos face to their survival,
... how Macropod rescuers and carers are the only protectors of our kangaroos.
